The Last Word in Sony DRM Rootkit Story?

"Sony BMG Music Entertainment is suing a company that developed antipiracy software for CDs, claiming the technology was defective and cost the record company millions of dollars to settle consumer complaints and government investigations."

"Sony BMG is seeking to recover some $12 million in damages from the Phoenix-based technology company"

definitely not the last word in the sony 'rootkit' story...

the reason is because sony is suing sunncomm... the so-called 'rootkit' was made by first4internet, not sunncomm...

i don't know why everyone seems to have a problem remembering that sony was deploying 2 separate drm schemes from 2 separate companies... one got called a 'rootkit' at a time when just about everything was getting called a rootkit, and the other behaved more like spyware because it phoned home...

Hmm, OK. I did know that, but why .. oh why are they suing THE OTHER malware company, not the one that made the 'rootkit' in question?

one possible reason is location - first4internet is based in the uk while amergence is apparently based in the states...

another reason is that there is precedence for prosecuting spyware vendors which may give them a better chance at a judgment in their favour...
