Keep Harping on It ...

On multiple occasions (search my blog...) I harped - no less - about this and now finally more of the smart people are saying this too: "But I do know that in 2007, the good guys will continue to surf in the wake of the bad guys’ innovation."

Nothing new here for most of my readers, but those folks who read too much vendor marketing about "saying ahead of the hackers" should pay attention.

Other than very novel approaches and ideas, I firmly believe that the bad guys will always out-innovate the good guys. That's just part of security. If the bad guys reach their limit, security has little to no incentive to innovate beyond just building efficiency. They'll have then stopped the bad guys.

It's kind of like trying to contain a toddler. You can do all sorts of things to distract and even put them in a crib to keep them from getting into trouble. They may try to climb up so you cover it. Eventually they give up and are content with their domain, at which point you don't keep trying to invent new ways to keep them inside. Rather, you go watch South Park.

:) That's a broad generalization, and some people will continue to try to innovate in the absence of stimulation.

Awesome metaphor :-)

Indeed, I am SO puzzled (to put it mildly) with all this "stay ahead of hackers" stuff, which is misleading out of the box :-)

"If the bad guys reach their limit, security has little to no incentive to innovate beyond just building efficiency. They'll have then stopped the bad guys."

And, that, as we know, will never ever ever happen!
